Minimum Wage Increase Sought In Wisconsin

Public Hearing Set For Wednesday

POSTED: 2:06 pm CDT August 3, 2008

Wisconsin's minimum wage would increase to $7.25 per hour next July to match the federal rate under a proposal subject to a public hearing this week.

The state Department of Workforce Development wants to raise the state's minimum wage from the current $6.50 per hour.

A public hearing on the change is scheduled for Wednesday in Madison.

The current state minimum wage took effect on June 1, 2006, after a two-year fight in the Legislature.

A bill raising the minimum wage passed the Democratic-controlled Senate in January but died in the Republican-controlled Assembly.

The change being discussed next week would take effect unless lawmakers object. If they do, the Legislature will have to pass a bill.
