Food Pantry Usage On Rise In Dane County

Organizers Say Donations Are Down As Need Rises

POSTED: 12:16 am CDT June 1, 2008

With food and fuel prices on the rise, many Dane County families are finding themselves at a place that they had never before imagined needing: a food pantry.

The number of people using the St. Vincent de Paul Pantry has risen at least 5 percent in the past year, officials said.

Organizers are now finding it hard to keep up with the demand for food. Second Harvest of Wisconsin is seeing less corporate and fewer individual donations, WISC-TV reported.

Bob Mohelnitzky, president and CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Wisconsin, said that many people live on the edge of poverty.

"A lot of the people living in poverty have one person working in the family and so they're just at the edge, and you change something like the cost of living dramatically, and it's those families that are on the edge that are really affected," Mohelnitzky said.

Nearly 10 percent of Dane County residents live below the poverty line. Forty percent of that 10 percent are children, WISC-TV reported.

St. Vincent de Paul serves more than 80 families a day. To help keep up with that demand and the needs of the more than 400 organizations it helps, Second Harvest is looking to get surpluses from retailers rather than warehouses, officials said.

Organizers said that anyone looking to help Second Harvest can call 608-223-9121.
